I am compelled to start 2013…

“I said ‘Somebody should do something about that. Then I realized I am Somebody.”  -by Lily Tomlin

And today that Somebody inside me is numb when I happened upon the headline of a newspaper; which said “Meri bachi ko mere paas rehne do, usey mujhse dur maat karo”. It was a very unfamiliar voice that racked with deep anguish against Sexual Violence. Yes The Mother blurted out at the moment when her daughter’s dead body was taken for funeral and lost her sense.
Today she is dead. But she existed with all her life before this brutal incident. So now closing off India, shutting down the subway roads, protest spilling onto the street asking for death penalty; can just put the whole nation on boil for a period. But does capital punishment and fixing the system can ever put an end to RAPE? Does this nationwide anger can shed the animal inside an individual? And  The feminine inside me is afraid to answer as often these kinds of heat turns up and eventually simmer down with the course of time. Perhaps these all can just mushroom the sympathy with in us and tap the chord of discontent. But the bottom line is “SHE” was not just a Rape Victim but a HUMAN BEING. Even the protocol says; Prostitutes are BROKEN WOMEN though our society has tagged them as Sex Object.
When we talk about India and Indian Culture, often it’s a fusion of Religion, Beliefs, Customs, Traditions, Values and the way a common man leads his life. We believe in Vedas / Quran / Bible, we believe on that Supernatural Power, we take a dip in the holy river Ganga to wash down our Paap (Sin), we believe in those rituals, don’t we? So now it bleeds my eyes when I pen down that the same India has maximum number of Rape, Sexual assault, Molestation.
The word Intercourse belongs to Science, Sex belongs to General outlook, Making Love belongs to Literature and Fuck belongs to Slang. Now where should we keep the word Rape and those Rapist? They never belong to anything. But they exist. So today, every single female’s deepest fear is not Death but Sexual Violence – RAPE.
The biggest democratic country where we are on fire for losing a Twenty three year girl; there my conscience asks, ‘is an Infant of Three year or a senior citizen of Sixty three year safe? How many more Centuries we Female are going to live in the shadow of Fear? Does our longing for a better Civilization will ever become true? Keeping these Questions in my mind I am compelled to start 2013…
Few lives last short, while the memories they hold last FOREVER…

  2. this is a question where to keep the word RAPE ??? but it does exist and i would like say that don't take the brutal situation, what happened, and start the new year. instead take new hopes and enthusiasm for new year and believe that you are going see a new and beautiful India without such brutal scene.

  3. do you think male is only responsible for that brutality. In my opinion we we can not blame a single factor.we the girl plays a major role in that.when u talk about indian culture why u forget what the role of family members in devloping morality.now everybody mostly mothers prefer their girls to be modern.only teach to be success by means.if she gets the foundation perfectly in young age she not be like this. GIrls what is the need of wearing short clothes,Go late night movies, dating with boys, making living relation, torture at home when a newly married girl is coming to a new home in the dowary at that time where all ur concern gone.boys wear full cloths and u wears hand kerchief in late night.u like the media, film where sex is more emphasized.u like dirty picture more than baghban. It shows more about the morals of girls.so dont blame the male.
First starts it from home.Increase the foundation at family.Teach the imp of giurl,Woman,Mother,Sister all relation of society and their need.Feel pain of other as ur.not like self ok then all is ok.start the mission then all will fine.No doubt in that. So many things are there first ask yourself are u concern about all this things at ur family. All these things ok in our family.Dont wise to tell if it happen at our home ,family. Why gigl destory female foeticide,Are girls not encourage this.
FROM SINGLE HAND YOU CAN NOT CLAP.
be aware of all this.start the initiative then see the difference.

    1. I feel pity on those who loves to play the ‘Blame Game’ rather than accepting a simple fact. If Women wearing a ‘Mini Skirt’ or a ‘Sexy Outfit’ onscreen or off screen is the reason behind these kind of brutal incident, then why do not all the Men in INDIA RAPE Woman? When I watch a movie or go to some party, that’s for the sake of Entertainment and nothing More. So if women are blamed for ‘Dressing Badly’; then it shows that the society we are living in IS NOT in the pink. Because bottom line is- a person’s basic good manners starts at Home, not at a Theater / Party / Magazine / Pub / Disco. So personally I believe this is The High Time so we should get this kind of Decaying mindset out of our society. RAPE is never ACCEPTED.

  4. More than tokenism : If we are lighting candles to support someone, I feel that we should also help someone who is lying on the road.

  5. Bilina......I pay my deep consolidation for Damini. Whatever happened with her, should not happen with anyone. She for me is a candle who sacrificed herself to give the light ( Light means a truth) and this truth takes us to a most darkest region of the society. we should not give the sacrifice of the bravest soul go waste.

    Beautiful was the life,
    Who kept all possibilities,
    Tender was the soul,
Which was yet to reach great heights,
    Evil is the mind,
    Who decorated it,
    Brutal are the human hands,
    Who destroyed the life.
    Cowards are the people,
    Who don’t pay a heed.
    Do we call them greedy?
When a piece of cloth they can’t share!
    Regress is the society,
    Where it happens,
    Democracy is a misuse,
    In such a country.
    Culprit is the Government,
    Which still is silent .

Wake up people! It happened to her now, it could happen to somebody you know tomorrow, it will keep happening until we raise our voice against it!

  6. Feminist Analysis of Rape & Sexual Assault

Feminist explanations locate the cause of this crime within society. they suggest that the crime of rape and sexual assault is a crime of power. Rape & sexual assault is an abuse of power which:

is a result of unequal power between perpetrator and victim/survivor
reinforces the inequality of power in this relationship
reinforces the inequality of power between men and women
Feminist theory focuses on the wider picture of women living in a society which is dominated by men. Rape and sexual assault is seen as one of the ways in which men enact their dominance in a violent way over women, children and other men. It rejects ideas that rape results from sexual attraction or from the way victims/survivors dress or behave.

When looking at our society, and indeed globally, men are in the most powerful positions in social, political, legal, economic, military and religious institutions. The dominance of men leads to a patriarchal societies in which men make the rules and laws. The rules and laws are structured in ways that uphold the status quo and thus the powerful positions of men. As a result, there is systemic and structural discrimination of women and other vulnerable and marginalised groups in society. These inequalities lead to increased vulnerability and negative social, economic and health outcomes for marginalised abnd disadvantaged groups. In regards to rape and sexual assault, this means increased vulnerability to become a victim/survivor of rape or sexual assault and to disadvantages when dealing with health, legal and other social systems.
